The Ogre’s Bride is coming to Disney+ – and if supernatural romance, fated mates and powerful male leads are your thing, this Japanese fantasy romance needs to be on your radar.

Originally released in Japanese cinemas in March 2026, The Ogre’s Bride (Oni no Hanayome / 鬼の花嫁) brings Kureha’s hugely popular Japanese romance fantasy to live action, starring Ren Nagase and Ai Yoshikawa as two people brought together by a supernatural bond neither can ignore.
And yes, before you ask: there’s romance. A lot of it.
At its heart, The Ogre’s Bride is built around one particularly irresistible romance trope: being chosen as someone’s one and only.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Ogre’s Bride before watching, including the story, cast, original books, romance, supernatural world and where you’ll be able to stream it.
What is The Ogre’s Bride about?
The Ogre’s Bride takes place in a version of Japan where humans live alongside supernatural beings known as ayakashi.
For an ayakashi, finding their destined bride isn’t simply about falling in love. A bride is a special, almost fated partner — and being chosen by a powerful ayakashi is considered an enormous honour.
Unfortunately, Yuzu Shinonome has spent much of her life feeling like anything but special.
Yuzu is an ordinary university student who has grown up feeling unloved and overlooked by her family, particularly compared with her younger sister Karin.
Karin has already been chosen as the bride of an ayakashi, placing her even further at the centre of the family’s attention.
But Yuzu’s life changes completely when she encounters Reiya Kiryuuin.
And Reiya isn’t just any ayakashi.
He belongs to the powerful ogre clan, sits at the very top of ayakashi society and is destined to become the clan’s next head.
More importantly?
He recognises Yuzu as his bride.
Suddenly the girl who has spent her life being treated as though she isn’t enough becomes the one person an incredibly powerful man has been waiting for.
You can probably already see why this one caught our attention.
The official film materials describe Reiya’s love for Yuzu as unwavering and even deliberately a little “heavy”, with Ren Nagase saying he and director Chihiro Ikeda worked on finding the right balance for Reiya’s intense devotion.

So… is The Ogre’s Bride a romance?
Absolutely.
Despite the fantasy setting, The Ogre’s Bride is very much a romance at its core.
The movie’s own promotional material describes it as an ultimate love story between an ogre and a human, with destiny bringing Reiya and Yuzu together as they search for genuine love.
And the setup hits several romance tropes that immediately have our attention:
Fated love. Powerful supernatural hero. Protective male lead. Neglected heroine. He falls hard. “You’re the only one for me” energy. Fantasy romance.
Basically, if your romance radar goes off whenever an impossibly powerful man looks at the heroine and decides her, it’s always been her…
You might want to clear your schedule.
Who plays Reiya and Yuzu in The Ogre’s Bride?
The live-action movie is led by Ren Nagase as Reiya Kiryuuin and Ai Yoshikawa as Yuzu Shinonome.

Ren Nagase as Reiya Kiryuuin
Ren Nagase plays Reiya, the charismatic heir to the ogre clan and one of the most powerful ayakashi in the story.
Nagase is also a member of Japanese pop duo King & Prince, but J-drama and Japanese movie fans may recognise him from projects including Yowamushi Pedal, Welcome Home, Monet and Netflix romance Drawing Closer.
Interestingly, The Ogre’s Bride marked Nagase’s first starring role in a full-fledged romance movie.
He explained ahead of the film’s release that he deliberately changed even Reiya’s physical mannerisms to create the character’s sense of authority and charisma. Director Chihiro Ikeda has also spoken about the particular presence Nagase brought to Reiya.
Ai Yoshikawa as Yuzu Shinonome
Opposite him is Ai Yoshikawa, playing Yuzu.
Yuzu may begin the story as someone accustomed to being pushed into the background, but she isn’t written simply as a helpless heroine waiting to be rescued.
Yoshikawa described Yuzu as someone who carries a painful family situation while also possessing an inner strength, and said she worked closely with the director to portray both sides of her personality.
That distinction could be particularly important to the romance: this isn’t only about Reiya choosing Yuzu.
It’s also about Yuzu finally discovering what it feels like to be genuinely valued.
🍿
Who else is in The Ogre’s Bride cast?
There’s another relationship worth knowing about before you start watching.
Kentaro Ito plays Yota Kogetsu, an ayakashi from the powerful fox clan, while Rin Kataoka plays Yuzu’s younger sister Karin — the girl Yota has chosen as his bride.
Karin’s status as an ayakashi bride has helped make her the favoured daughter within Yuzu’s family.
Then Reiya arrives.
And suddenly the entire balance changes.
The supporting cast also includes Katsumi Hyodo, Ayana Shiramoto, Momoko Tanabe, Nanao Tanihara, Kyusaku Shimada and Machiko Ono.
So while the central romance is Reiya and Yuzu, expect family tension, jealousy and other supernatural relationships to complicate that happily-ever-after.

The Ogre’s Bride is based on a hugely popular Japanese romance series
This isn’t an original movie — and its source material is much bigger than you might realise.
The Ogre’s Bride began as a novel series written by Kureha, first published in 2020.
A manga adaptation illustrated by Jun Togashi followed in 2021 through noicomi.
And the numbers are pretty impressive.
By July 2026, the franchise had surpassed 7.5 million copies in circulation across the novels, manga and digital editions.
The manga has also picked up significant recognition in Japan. It ranked first in the girls’ comics category of Comic C’moA’s annual rankings in both 2022 and 2023, and won the overall grand prize at the 2023 Minna ga Erabu!! Denshi Comic Taisho awards.
So this isn’t some obscure romance that’s suddenly been turned into a film.
It arrived with a substantial existing fandom.

Wait – isn’t there also an Ogre’s Bride anime?
Yes – and this is where things can get confusing.
2026 has also brought an anime adaptation of The Ogre’s Bride.
So if you’re searching The Ogre’s Bride where to watch and see episodes rather than a movie, you’ve probably found the anime.
For UK viewers, the anime is currently available through Crunchyroll, including the Crunchyroll Amazon Channel.
The version we’re talking about here, however, is the 2026 live-action Japanese movie starring Ren Nagase and Ai Yoshikawa.
Two adaptations.
Same addictive premise.
Very easy to mix up.
When was The Ogre’s Bride movie released?
The live-action The Ogre’s Bride was released theatrically in Japan on 27 March 2026
It was directed by Chihiro Ikeda, whose previous work includes Insomniacs After School and Kowloon Generic Romance.
The movie was subsequently described by its distributor as a theatrical hit, and its home release is scheduled for Japan on 9 October 2026.
But there’s better news for those of us who don’t particularly fancy flying to Japan to watch it.
🍿
Where can I watch The Ogre’s Bride?
Here’s the important bit.
The live-action The Ogre’s Bride begins streaming on Disney+ from 27 September 2026.
Distributor Shochiku officially announced the Disney+ streaming date alongside the movie’s Blu-ray and DVD release.
However, there’s one caveat for international viewers.
At the time of writing, we haven’t found an official Disney+ UK listing confirming that the live-action movie will arrive in the UK catalogue on 27 September.
So UK viewers: keep this one firmly on your watchlist, but we’ll update this page as soon as its UK availability is confirmed.
Pass the Pop will be watching this one closely.
🍿
Is The Ogre’s Bride worth putting on your watchlist?
If you love Asian romance dramas and films, there’s a lot here that sounds promising.
The supernatural premise is obviously part of the appeal, but underneath it is a much more familiar romance story about a woman who has spent years believing she is less worthy than the people around her finally meeting someone who sees her differently.
And not just differently.
He sees her as irreplaceable.
That’s where The Ogre’s Bride potentially hits the sweet spot between Japanese romance and the kind of fantasy-romance storytelling readers already devour in books.
It’s also why we’re particularly interested to see how the live-action adaptation handles Reiya and Yuzu’s chemistry.
Because gorgeous cinematography and supernatural world-building are lovely.
But we’re here for the romance.
Obviously.
There’s music from King & Prince too
One final detail for Ren Nagase fans: King & Prince perform the movie’s theme song, “Waltz for Lily.”
The movie also features “Ray” by YU-KA as its image song.
Between the fantasy visuals, Japanese setting and romantic premise, we’re expecting this one to look — and sound — rather beautiful.
