Prime Video’s Emotional Wattpad Romance Won’t Be For Everyone – Boulevard

If you’ve spent any time on Wattpad over the last decade, chances are you’ve heard of Boulevard.

Long before it arrived on Prime Video, Flor M. Salvador’s heartbreaking young adult romance had already built a huge following online, attracting millions of readers before making the leap from self-published sensation to bestselling novel.

Now, the story of Hasley Weigel and Luke Howland has finally made its way to our screens.

But does it live up to the hype?

Here’s my honest review.

What is Boulevard about?

At its heart, Boulevard follows two teenagers carrying far more emotional weight than anyone their age should have.

Hasley is trying to find her place in the world while navigating her own personal struggles.

Luke, meanwhile, is battling addiction and the demons that come with it.

When their paths cross, they discover comfort in one another, but what starts as an innocent first love soon becomes tangled in heartbreak, unhealthy choices and the harsh reality that sometimes love isn’t enough to save someone.

It’s a romance built around emotional trauma rather than fairy-tale moments, making it a much heavier watch than many viewers might expect.

From Wattpad phenomenon to Prime Video

One of the most interesting things about Boulevard is where it all began.

Before becoming a published novel and eventually a film, author Flor M. Salvador first shared the story on Wattpad, where it exploded in popularity and developed an incredibly passionate fanbase.

It’s another example of how online storytelling is shaping modern romance adaptations.

Just like After, The Kissing Booth and My Fault, publishers and streaming platforms are increasingly looking towards viral online communities to find the next generation of romance stories.

Without that early Wattpad success, there’s a good chance Boulevard would never have reached Prime Video.

My review

I’ll be honest…

This one didn’t completely land for me.

I’d give Boulevard a 6 out of 10.

That’s not because it’s a bad film.

It’s because I think it’s aimed at a very specific audience.

If you’re going in expecting a mature romance with incredible chemistry and layered character development, you’re probably going to leave disappointed.

Instead, Boulevard fully embraces the intensity of teenage first love.

Everything feels bigger.

Every emotion feels louder.

Every decision feels impulsive.

And in many ways… that’s exactly the point.

Where the film worked best for me was in showing just how consuming first love can feel when you’re young, especially when both people are carrying emotional scars of their own.

The romance won’t be for everyone

One thing worth mentioning is that this isn’t always an easy watch.

Not just because of the themes surrounding addiction and trauma.

There are also quite a few moments that genuinely made me cringe.

Some of that may come down to the English dubbing, but even beyond that, there are scenes that lean heavily into the dramatic, emotional style that young adult romances are known for.

Some viewers will completely buy into it.

Others may find themselves rolling their eyes.

Your enjoyment will probably depend on which camp you fall into.

Who should watch Boulevard?

If you love:

Young adult romance
First love stories
Emotional coming-of-age dramas
Broken boy × good girl romances
Wattpad adaptations
Messy, chaotic relationships
Tearjerker romance films

…then Boulevard could absolutely be worth adding to your watchlist.

If, however, you’re looking for something with a more mature romance, stronger chemistry and a little more subtlety, this probably won’t be your next obsession.

Final verdict

Boulevard isn’t trying to be the next great romance film.

It’s telling a story about the chaos, intensity and heartbreak of first love, and for the audience it was made for, I can completely understand why it became such a huge success on Wattpad.

For me, though, it never quite reached the emotional highs I was hoping for.

The performances have their moments, the central relationship is easy enough to invest in, but the film occasionally slips into melodrama and some unintentionally awkward scenes stop the emotion from hitting quite as hard as it should.

Final Rating: 6/10

If you’re a fan of emotional young adult romances, you’ll probably enjoy the ride.

Just make sure you know what you’re getting before you press play.

🚨 Boulevard Ending Explained (Spoilers)

If you haven’t watched Boulevard yet, this is your chance to turn back.

The ending of Boulevard isn’t designed to leave you with a neat, fairy-tale conclusion. Instead, it stays true to the emotional themes that run throughout the entire story.

Luke’s battle with addiction and the personal demons he’s been carrying prove to be bigger than love alone can overcome. Throughout the film, Hasley desperately wants to believe that loving someone is enough to save them, but Boulevard ultimately delivers a much harsher message.

Sometimes it isn’t.

Rather than celebrating a perfect romance, the film explores the painful reality that you can’t heal someone who isn’t ready to heal themselves. Love can offer support, hope and comfort, but it can’t erase trauma or addiction.

It’s a bittersweet ending that feels fitting for the story Flor M. Salvador originally told on Wattpad. While it may not be the ending some viewers were hoping for, it reinforces the film’s central message about first love, emotional dependency and the difficult lessons that often come with growing up.

Whether you find the ending heartbreaking or frustrating will probably depend on what you wanted from the story. If you were hoping for a traditional happily-ever-after, Boulevard may leave you disappointed. But if you appreciate romances that aren’t afraid to explore the messier side of love, the ending is likely to stay with you long after the credits roll.
